Vintage Tuareg Leather & Shell Khomissar Amulet Necklace, Niger/Mali
This vintage 1980s Tuareg khomissar pendant with a glass bead cord takes the form of a stylised hand. It consists of several layers of wood with five diamond shaped shells that symbolise fertility and a further decorative heart shaped shell to complete the design. Two additional decorative shells dangle either side of the khomissar, both adorned with colourful wool strands (one of these has a hole at the top – see photos) Glass and plastic beads as well as decorative tribal beads enhance the necklace.
Traditionally, khomissar are worn to protect the wearer, offering perceived protection from harm. A lovely collectible old piece.
