Silver Uzbek Earrings, Central Asia

£125.00

Long dangly silver earrings, made recently in Uzbekistan using old elements. The top disc of each earring is an old Indian rupee coin, presumably acquired via trade routes. The image on the coins is King George VI. It is difficult to see the date on them but they look like 1940 and 1943. At the centre of each is a turquoise bead. The larger discs have a hammered decorative design from which are suspended mother-of-pearl, coral and silver beads.

The two earrings are asymmetrical, one has five dangles, the other has six. This is very common in this style of earring as it is believed to offer protection from the evil eye by creating a sense of imperfection that deters negative forces. Unusual and interesting. The ear hook is 0.8 mm in width, suitable for wearing.
