RARE Antique Early 19th Century Kazakh Pectoral Ornament, Central Asia

£1,675.00

An outstanding antique Kazakh complete pectoral ornament with its original chain (which has been added to at the very top, see photos). Made in the early 1800s, this is a museum quality item which exhibits lovely patina.

The pectoral comprises two parts. The main element is a stunning large oval-shaped gilded pendant with traditional intricate Kazakh design elements including fine silver work and granulation. It is embellished with glass cabochons. The red paper/foil underneath the glass, commonly found in very old Kazakh pieces, has deteriorated over time but large remnants of it can still be seen.

The uppermost element comprises two highly ornate lightly gilded interconnected elements which can be separated or held together for a more uniform look to the ornament. They were used as a decorative clothes fastener (Kapsyrma). The glass is unfortunately cracked on them due to age and wear (see photos) but this does not detract from the beauty of this old piece.

Five original ornate dangles complete the piece.

This is a magnificent and rare museum quality piece; it is heavy, ornate and the discerning collector’s dream. In good vintage condition, with wear commensurate with age.
