Vintage Yemeni Jewish Labbeh Necklace - Rare

An outstanding old labbeh necklace made by Jewish goldsmiths in Yemen prior to their mass exodus to Israel in the 1950s. This type of necklace was favoured by both Jewish and Muslim people alike and could be worn in several ways: as a choker, hooked onto a headdress or as a frontal head ornament.

The detailing on this labbeh is amazing. It comprises 24 ornate rectangular plaques, each one finely decorated with a filigree floral design and a central turquoise bead. These are strung together with triangular terminal pieces at each end and fastened with a hook and eye clasp on a silver chain. Suspended from the plaques are multiple ornate filigree dangles with diverse intricate designs, yet largely arranged symmetrically to give uniformity to the necklace.

There are still traces of the original gilding on the silver. This is a true rare treasure, one of a kind, displaying beautiful Jewish Yemeni craftsmanship. Highly collectible, also wearable as a choker.
