Rare Antique Gilded Silver Temporal Ornaments (pair), Meknes, Morocco - large
An outstanding pair of rare antique temporals known as tikhrazin or douwwah, made in the late 19th century in Meknès, Morocco.
This pair of large high-grade silver hoop temporal ornaments are museum quality. They would have been worn attached to a woman’s veil on either side of her head.
The temporals are made of gilded silver (some of the gilding is now worn through age) and feature a hand engraved floral design. Each hoop has four figure of eight dangles symbolising eternity and is adorned with coloured cut crystal glass.
From each dangle is suspended a large Mediterranean coral bead set into fine silver casing. The total weight of the coral alone is approximately 40g! The coral is clean and absolutely stunning. It was believed to bring baraka, supernatural blessing, to the wearer.
Due to their large hoop size, ornate nature, gilding and exquisite coral, it is likely that these temporals belonged to the woman of a wealthy prominent family.
These are a magnificent collector’s piece – rare and highly collectible one-off pieces.
