Antique Taounza Headdress, Akhsass, Morocco - RARE
This is an antique fabric embroidered headband worn by women in the region of Akhsass, Morocco. Cylindrical red and orange glass beads are complemented by black and white beads in vertical columns, all sewn onto the fabric band, each one decorated with an old coin which hangs just above eye level. Some coins are dated 1299 Hijri years which is 1903 in the Gregorian calendar. Often this type of headband would have been worn with an even more decorative headdress such as the ‘Isni’ (see photo). This headdress has wear to the band commensurate with age. A rare collector’s item.
