Antique Yemeni Hirz (Amulet) Necklace
This is a lovely old antique Yemeni amulet pendant on a chain, made circa 1910. It has nice granulation work and worn patina. The bell dangles are perceived to ward off evil and protect the wearer.
This piece is made of silver alloy. The amount of silver used by Yemenite silversmiths to make jewellery depended on the wealth of the person commissioning the piece as silver was a scarce commodity, especially in rural areas. However, the silversmiths still carried out work to the same standard regardless of the metal used, creating beautiful decorative items.
